Seal of California cracked from 1906 Earthquake

Millions visit the SF Ferry Building but never see the mosaic of the Great Seal of California that has a crack down the middle from the 1906 Earthquake.

The central image is of the Roman goddess Minerva (or Athena) who was born a fully grown woman. This symbolized California becoming a state without having to first be a territory.

Around Minerva, you can see images that represent key aspects of California's history and identity:

  • California Grizzly Bear -- the state's official animal
  • Grape Vines -- representing the wine industry
  • Grain -- representing agriculture and rich farmland
  • Gold Miner - reminding people of the Gold Rush
  • Sailing Ships - representing how the Spanish and other settlers first reached California
  • Mountains with white peaks - representing the Sierra Nevada range
  • 31 Stars - California was the 31st state to join the Union in 1850
  • Eureka - the word Archimedes shouted when he figured out how to test the purity of gold

To see the Great Seal, take the steps up to the 2nd floor from the main entrance to the Ferry Building. Just let the security guard know that you are here to see the seal. Appreciate the architecture, and also the quieter and cleaner bathrooms.
